“Keine Macht”

Negation is usually expressed in German by placing “nicht” [nisht] after the verb:

In the source text example, however, we are negating a noun rather than a verb, to express the idea of there being none of that noun.

The 'kein' word replaces the usual article ('the' or 'a' word), as instead of having 'the power', now we have 'no power'

The Nominative Case

“Keine Macht”

German has four cases, we will look at just one in this instance – the nominative case.

The nominative case acts on the subject of a sentence, or the person/thing in the sentence that is 'doing' the verb.

e.g. The cat sits on the mat.

In this instance 'the cat' is the subject of the sentence, as it is doing the sitting.

'The mat' isn't doing anything. It is being sat on, so it is the object of the sentence – the person/thing that the verb is being done to.

The nominative case is also used for some sentence objects – usually those being subjected to the verbs 'sein' (to be) and 'werden' (to become)

The articles for the nominative case in German are as follows:

Definite Article: (the)

masculine – der

feminine – die

neutral – das

plural – die

Indefinite Article: (a)

masculine – ein

feminine – eine

neutral – ein

plural – eine

The source text example uses a 'kein-' word, rather than an article. To get the correct form of this for the nominative subject, simply add a 'k' to an indefinite article:

The present tense

For those that wish to learn to form it, however, here are the rules for conjugating “regular” verbs (verbs that follow the standard pattern set out below):

1. remove the verb's infinitive ending (“en”) to reveal the verb stem.  The infinitive form of the verb is it's full form.  This would be the difference between "does" (conjugated/finite form) and "to do" (infinitive form) in English.

bleiben > bleib

2. add the relevant present tense ending, also shown in the verb tables at the end of this post:

Ich - “e” > bleibe

du - “st” > bleibst

er/sie/es/man - “t” > bleibt

ihr - “t” > bleibt*

wir/Sie/sie - “en” > bleiben*

*basically, all plural forms except for the informal plural form of “you” (ihr) keep the “en” ending.

The future tense/word order

The formation of the future tense in German is really simple.

1. conjugate the verb “werden” (to become) in the present tense.

2. pair it with the relevant verb in the infinitive.

Ich gehe (I go) > Ich werde gehen (I will go)

In German, in most instances, the first verb will take a second-position place in a sentence, and will be conjugated. Any subsequent verbs will be in the infinitive form, and will be “booted” to the end of the sentence/clause:

DIVINE COMEDY - SONGS OF LOVE - Liedtext

Dieses Lied habe ich gewählt, nicht nur weil ‘The Divine Comedy’ einer tollen Band sind, sondern auch, weil dieses Lied mit meinem letzen Artikel zusammenhängt - Das war die Melodie der Irischen Fersehserie ‘Father Ted’ (Diese Version des Lieds findet sich auch ganz unten im Artikel).  Die Gruppe stammt aus Nordirland und die Name selbst von Italienische Schriftsteller, Dantes, Epik.

IRISCH FÜR ANFÄNGER - Father Ted video*

‘Father Ted’ ist eine Fersehserie aus Irland, sehr beliebt in England.  Es geht um drei sehr ungewöhnliche Pfarrer und ihr Haushälterin.  Sie wohnen auf der ‘Craggy Island’, eine kleinen Insel in der Nähe Irlands, wo niemanden wohnt.  Dort waren sie verbannt wegen Dummheit (Pater Dougal), Veruntreuung (Pater Ted) und Alcoholismus (Pater Jack).  Unten habe ich ein ein paar Bilder von die obenen Clip zusammengestellt, um ihm deutlicher zu übersetzen

 

Frau Doyle: Ach, ist das Fernsehen wieder kaputt, Pater

Pater Ted: Ja, wir hatten ein bisschen Mühe mit dem…

Frau Doyle: Machen Sie keine Sorge, es gibt nichts damit los, was man nicht mit ein bisschen du-weißt-schon-was in der Kopfabteilung nicht reparieren kann.

- Feck! - Sheiß D’rauf! - ‘Feck’ ist die Irishe Alternative fürs Englishe ‘Fuck’.  Es existiert sodass die Iren Schimpfwörte so viel wie möglich sagen können (auch im Radio) ohne in Schwierigkeiten geraten zu werden

- Feck off! - Verpiss dich! - genauso als mit oben.  Leider konnte ich keine Synonyme für ‘Feck!’ und ‘Feck off!’ finden, die das gleiche Schimpfwort benutzen, aber wenn ihr Deutschen sowas kennen würde es mich interessieren so was ‘rauszufinden.

LAUGHTER IS INFECTIOUS - at least with one of these you won’t be…

Eine Freundin von mir war vor ein paar Monaten in Ibiza.  Kurz danach hatte ich Geburtstag und ich hatte die Freude, dieser Komediekondom als Geschenk zu bekommen - eigentlich wollte sie nur, dass ich ihn übersetze, denn die Bilder so lustig aussahen.  Los geht’s…

ALESTORM - "WENCHES & MEAD" VS. "WEIBER UND WEIN" - lyrics (Liedtext)

Alestorm are a Scottish band established in 2004 who play power/folk metal, or as they like to call it, pirate metal. The pirate theme is, as one would expect from this tag, rife in their music, and what better to accompany any self-respecting pirate than his wenches and his mead. The song in question has been translated for the benefit of the band’s German following, which has increased following their success touring there and playing the notorious Wacken festival. Their translation is, very successful in its attempt to capture the essence of the song, whilst maintaining the ryhme and meter – but here is a literal translation of both versions for any die-hard fans that might be interested:

Alestorm sind eine Gruppe aus Schottland, die Power- oder Folkmetall spielen, oder, wie sie es nennen würden, Piratenmetall. Das Piratthema kommt also, wie man von diesem Etikett erwarten würde, häufig in ihrer Musik vor. Und was ist besser, jener selbstwertgefühlenden Pirat zu begleiten, als seine Weiber und seiner Wein. Das Lied infrage war ins Deutsche übersetzt für die dortige Fangemeinde, die nach viel Erfolg bei Tournees und das notorische Wackenfestival größer geworden ist. Ihre Übersetzung hat genau das Wesen des Liedes getroffen, ohne der Reim und das Versmaß zu verlieren – hier steht aber trotzdem eine wörtliche Übersetzung die beiden Versionen für irgendeine eingefleischte Fans, die sich vielleicht darüber interessieren:
